Sola, who lived in the eight century, was born in England. We know nothing of his early life, but eventually he became a monk and migrated to Germany.
In Germany, Sola became a follower of Boniface, who later ordained him. Following ordination, Sola lived as a hermit near Fulda, and then at Eichstaat.
Many people sought Sola’s guidance, and numerous individuals stayed on with him. Eventually, he founded the abbey of Solnhofen, and he died there on December 3, 794.
As we anticipate the birth of Christ, we should remind ourselves that holiness of life and its consequent virtuous living is the real reason Jesus took on our humanity. A life well lived, like that of St. Sola, is a true characteristic of a Messianic people.
O God, we seek Your loving care in preparing to celebrate once again Christ’s having walked with us. Through the intercession of Your servant St. Sola, may we never allow ourselves to stray from His teachings. This we ask through Christ our Lord. Amen.
