Saint Francis was born at Savoy in 1567. After being ordained a priest he labored diligently for the restoration of Catholicism in his country. Chosen bishop of Geneva, he showed himself as a true pastor toward his clerics and the faithful, strengthening their faith by his writings, works and example. He died at Lyons on December 28, 1622, and was buried at Annecy on this day.
St. Francis proved to be a great leader and initiator. His concern for souls in his diocese led him to work tirelessly to implant the practice of loving God in a tangible manner. In the age of widespread modernism, he displayed great courage and trust in God, leading his spiritual children to see the importance and power of prayer.
Father, you gave St. Francis de Sales the spirit of compassion to befriend all men on the way of salvation. By his example, lead us to show your gentle love in the service of our fellow men. Grant this Christ our Lord. amen.
